Birthday reflections

Confession: At the ripe old age of thirty, I feel as much a child as ever. It seems to be taking me an awfully long time to grow up.

Your words were such a sweet surprise yesterday—thank you for honoring me beyond what I deserve. I listened and smiled and celebrated.

And slept in so luxuriously, and hugged children, and baked bread.

And ran through frosty grass, and took lovely phone calls, and made a pizza.

For the first time in my life, I made myself a birthday cake. I wanted thirty candles!

Kelly, Lily, Shari, Aarick, Regan

Unfortunately, they created such a blaze that they rather obscured the other objects in the photographs.

Kelly is just coming to the realization that she didn’t exactly help blow them out, though everyone else did and she sure tried…

And this morning…!!

A specially-handmade cake for me at the fellowship meal, and an overflowing basket of goodies and presents from my church ladies–slippers, chocolate, books, tea, dainties, candles, the softest blanket I’ve ever touched.

If I am a child, I am a deeply blessed one.

Who is the googly-eyed character on the bar, lower-right corner? And why does he look so startled?

Ah yes. I failed to introduce Monsieur Turkey. He was so proud of his handsome, 5-feathered tail. He is looking startled because alas, he never anticipated that into his own personal space could prance this 30-feathered Thing of flame and glory.

He has not been the same since.

Turning 30 was quite depressing for me… And each birthday since hasn’t been any better.

I have a blessed life, but somehow age seems to symbolize lost opportunity. Not sure why.

But enough of that. Happy birthday! And that is quite a handsome crew! My own children do a lot to help me keep feeling young. 🙂

…and I was thinking you were turning 28…you’ll always be young in my eyes, with the way you so quickly run after children and accomplish so much in your sweet realm!! You deserve every bit of celebration that you received…and we are so blessed to have you as part of our family!! Life is too short not to celebrate every day…the gift…the present! BTW, was your second daughter helping you to celebrate your thirtieth?

and my eyes are bad enough in the a.m. that I didn’t see the caption under the picture until just now, and see that it was Lily enjoying the moment with you and yours!

Yes, my “other girl” Lily called to wish me a happy birthday and sweetly invited herself to my party. 🙂 I couldn’t have been more delighted!
