Our favorite pizza

Confession: We always have pizza on Saturday nights, unless we are away from home. It’s a tradition I grew up with in my family, and now my children count on it.

The soft and delicious crust is a recipe passed down to me by my mom.

Pizza Dough

1 Tbsp. yeast
1 Tbsp. sugar
1 cup warm water

— Stir together.

1 Tbsp. oil
½ tsp. salt
Garlic salt to taste
Oregano to taste
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
2 cups hi-gluten flour

— Add, and knead with dough hook attachment in mixer until dough is soft and elastic, no longer clinging to sides of bowl. Let rise till double, 30-45 minutes. Pat into pizza pan.

Sometimes I shake extra herbs into the dough – sage, thyme, parsley, basil.

Recently we’ve been stuffing the crust. We cut string cheese in half the long way and wrap the dough around it – or, more often, use equivalent size strips from a chunk of bulk cheese.

Then we butter the top of the crust (only the stuffed part) and sprinkle it with garlic salt, to make basically a stuffed breadstick. Now the crust is the best part of the pizza!

We add pizza sauce and our favorite toppings – usually a pound of bulk sausage, browned; mushrooms (on all but two slices); shredded mozzarella; and lots of pepperoni. We bake it at 375° for 30 minutes, and enjoy together.

Yum.

Do you have food traditions for certain days each week? I’d love to hear them, and give them a try in our family.

Also, just FYI – I let Kelly comment on my last post to give an update on how she’s doing. By now she’s as active as ever, having to be reminded of the doctor’s orders to go easy on her tummy until her follow-up appointment. Thanks for your kind words to her and to me.

Looks amazing! I’ll have a slice! Our family also did pizza every Saturday night. And still does! Once, we decided to change to taco salad but didn’t last long. Also on Saturday breakfast, we always had pancakes, which included a large ‘lottery ‘ pancake that one won by guessing a number (pre-selected by the cook) between 1-100, closest to the selection. Love your blog. Glad Kelly is recovering. Blessings!

That’s amazing I wonder if you came from the same area as my husband. They did the same thing for Sat breakfast only his dad preselected the number. I had never heard of it.

You can also buy gluten and add a little to your regular flour. 😉

Wow! Can I come visit you some Saturday evening- I want some of that pizza!!!!! 🙂 lol Just kidding about the visiting part! 😉 I will definitely have to try that recipe! I think I shall tonight, since it is Saturday anyway. 😛 And while we eat ours, I’ll no doubt think of you, who are probably eating the same. LOL
Every time we make pizza we always wish we knew how to do a cheese crust…. We knew that you had to do something down that line like you showed, but never experimented with it… :/ Thanks a LOT for sharing the recipe! I love your blog! Blessings…

With a crust like that, I wouldn’t be throwing away my pizza bones!

Our pizza night is Friday. We’ve been trying and trying to find a pizza we both like and want to eat every week. This just MAY be the one. Thank you! And thanks to your Mama, too. <3

Your pizza looks so perfect! I was planning to have pizza for supper when I saw your post so I pulled out some sliced mozzarella and cut it in stripes several slices deep. The difficulty came when I put the dough on the preheated pizza stone and attempted to pull the edges up around the cheese. The bottom of the dough was already getting baked so it didn’t go so well but I managed and it was yummy tho not half as beautiful as yours 🙂 thanks for the idea!

Wow.

My pizza regiment is nearly identical to yours.

I have stuffed the crust before, but its not a regular occurrence here.

And. As always, your food is carefully prepared and so pleasing to the eye.

A true work of art.

We also do pizza every sat night. This summer tomato basil has been the favorite. Replace pizza sauce with 1/2 c of mayo mixed with a clove of fresh garlic, minced. Add some parm to the mozzarella. Top with sliced tomatoes and chopped fresh basil and bake as usual

Why yes, I have recently implemented a new tradition in the house: leftover Sunday! It’s so fuss free and keeps everyone’s expectations nice and low, right where I like them. 😉

But your pizza does look delicious.

Our traditional Sunday lunch was mac and cheese with hot dogs and a side of pork & beans and often pickles. Mac and cheese was a favorite of dad’s and that sure made it easier on Saturday. We still call a meal like this “Sunday lunch” even if it is made some other time. 🙂

We also often grilled hamburgers for Saturday supper, eating outside if the weather was nice (and the flies weren’t too terrible–we lived on a dairy farm). Mom and Dad would each have their can of pop to drink with their burgers, but we children would drink Kool aid or lemonade since we didn’t enjoy pop. Fun memories . . .
